Causes and treatment of back complaints

Back complaints can cause a variety of symptoms, and have various origins. Sharp pain, radiating pain in the buttocks or legs, numbness and tingling, stiffness and more. What all of the above have in common is that they usually stem from a problem with how the joints in the pelvis and spine move.

Muscle pain, of course, is also a common problem, but it is usually a symptom. When one or more joints get stuck, the surrounding joints and muscles have to compensate, causing inflammation, pain and stiffness.

Relaxing and strengthening the muscles will help, but as long as the base of the spine, the joints, are stuck, the problem will keep coming back.

Hernia

A herniated disc is damage to the discs, cushions, that sit between each of the vertebrae. Hernias can heal, but the most important thing is to find out why it happened in the first place, and to correct it.

Although herniated discs are often the result of a sudden movement, that is rarely the sole cause. They are often caused by repetitive stress due to an imbalance in the spine, which leads to overuse of the disc, which then slowly degenerates before suddenly rupturing.

Chiropractic treatments can help correct that imbalance, help you heal faster and prevent the problem from recurring.

Pelvic instability

Pelvic instability is often caused by a combination of dysfunctional joints in the lower back, pelvis and hips, as well as weakness of specific postural muscles.

Chiropractic care can help restore normal movement in the parts of the spine and pelvis that are causing problems, and can prescribe specific exercises to rebalance and stabilize your body.

Sciatica

Sciatica by itself is not an accurate diagnosis. It is a symptom of pain, numbness or tingling that radiates into the buttocks or legs.

Those radiating symptoms are caused by compression of a nerve, usually in the lower back joints, sacroiliac joints or sometimes under the piriformis muscle.

To relieve sciatica, the cause of the nerve compression must be removed, which can be done through specific chiropractic treatments.

Sacro-iliac (SI joint) pain

Pain in the sacroiliac joints is one of the most common forms of low back pain. It can often mimic other conditions, such as hernias, sciatica and hip problems, and can also cause radiating pain into the buttock, leg and groin.

There are two SI joints, and it can sometimes happen that one of them becomes blocked or does not move as it should. When that happens, the pain may be localized on the same side, but often the pain appears on the other side, in the other SI joint that is now overcompensating.

This is why it is very important to have a thorough examination by a professional, because just treating the pain may not be enough.

How can chiropractic help with back complaints?​

A chiropractor is an expert in the spine and in the treatment of physical complaints in the joints, muscles and surrounding structures.

2. Spanning in de spieren, pezen en fascia
In sommige gevallen zal de chiropractor specifieke spanningsgebieden in de spieren of fascia losmaken met behulp van dry needling of een andere behandelingstechniek. Een bezoek aan de masseuse of een verwijzing naar een van de fysiopraktijken waar we vaak mee samenwerken kan ook worden aanbevolen.
3. Versterking van specifieke houdingsspieren
Zodra de basis van je lichaam, de wervelkolom en het bekken, beter gaan bewegen, kunnen we de belangrijkste gebieden identificeren die versterkt moeten worden. Indien nodig zal de chiropractor hiervoor een trainingsplan voorschrijven.
4. Verbetering van houdingsgewoonten
Het is dan belangrijk om vast te stellen wat een terugval kan uitlokken of spanning in je spieren en gewrichten kan opbouwen, en om te proberen dit zoveel mogelijk te optimaliseren.
In veel gevallen zal de spanning uiteindelijk weer opbouwen, ons lichaam is niet gemaakt om de hele dag achter de computer te zitten of om zware en repetitieve taken uit te voeren.
5. Onderhoud
Het is ontzettend moeilijk om een perfecte levensstijl te hebben, met weinig stress, goede voeding, een geweldige houding en elke dag voldoende beweging.

Onderhoudsbehandelingen kunnen helpen om de beweging van de gewrichten in je wervelkolom optimaal te houden en spanning los te laten voordat het weer symptomatisch wordt. De meeste klachten bouwen zich in weken of maanden op en dit betekent dat grote problemen vaak kunnen worden voorkomen!
