No, you never need a referral to see a chiropractor. But when physiotherapists, neurologists and general practitioners refer patients to us, they often send along a small letter detailing what has been done up to that point.

An intake appointment takes 30 minutes, a regular treatment 15 minutes. Sometimes we recommend coming for a double appointment if there are many physical complaints.

The chiropractic adjustment, the cracking, in itself is not painful.
But if you’re in a lot of pain, the surrounding muscles, tendons and ligaments can be irritated and sensitive. Releasing that tension can sometimes create soreness, somewhat like what you would feel during a deep tissue massage.

However, our chiropractors have many techniques at their disposal and can adjust their treatment to all levels of pain tolerance. Treatments can be very gentle if needed, and it is also possible to perform spinal adjustments without cracking, should you feel too uncomfortable.

Research overwhelmingly shows that chiropractic treatments are safe.

Some side effects may be felt after treatments, such as muscle pain, stiffness, or in some rare cases, headaches. These are benign and usually disappear within 24 to 48 hours; they are usually an indication that your body is changing and adapting to the treatment.

The profession is becoming increasingly popular in the Netherlands and it is important to choose a chiropractor who has had appropriate training and is accredited by a regulatory body. Our chiropractors are all registered with the CCA, DCF, ICA and SNRC.

Our chiropractors are trained in a wide array of techniques. This ables us to treat many physical complaints in different ways, depending on how your body is and reacts to the treatments.

Our specialty lies in the treatment of back, pelvic and neck pain, as well as shoulder and headache complaints. However the body moves at one, and an imbalance or blockage in one area can lead to dysfunctions in others. As such we also make a point to treat issues in the rest of the skelet such as hip, knee, foot, elbow and wrist pain.

There are quite a few differences between the treatments of a physiotherapist and a chiropractor. However, the approach itself is already different, a chiropractor looks at the whole body, with a focus on the spine, while a physiotherapist often looks more locally, in the area of pain.

A physio will usually treat the muscles, to strengthen or loosen them as needed. The chiropractor looks more at the bones and joints, how they move and their position. However, a good therapist always looks at the whole, and that is what we at Chiropractie Medicus always do.

A physio who has taken an additional course in manual therapy can sometimes perform mobilizations, cracking. The difference with chiropractic is the same as above, it is usually localized to the area of the complaint. However, the “correction” itself is also different, chiropractors look more specifically at which joint is stuck and in which direction, and make an adjustment to fix it. A manual therapist mobilizes usually all the joints in the area.
